Does chameleon eat chocolate?

Chameleons are insectivorous and strictly don’t give them chocolates. Chocolates can be fatal to them. Not only chocolates any sugar content food is fatal to them. They can’t break down the sugar and digest it like humans.

You cannot feed the chameleons with ice creams, cookies, or any type of human consumable food.

Why chocolates are fatal to chameleons?

Chocolates are not only fatal to chameleons. They are fatal to cats and dogs as well. Due to the presence of Theobromine, a xanthine compound chocolates are fatal to your pets. They can’t break down the theobromine as we do.

My Chameleons seem to be more interested in the chocolates than the locusts. What to do?

Your chameleon thinks the big bar of the chocolate is a big insect and hence it seems to be interested in the chocolate rather than the medium-sized insect you are feeding them. Your chameleon doesn’t know it as chocolate for them it is a big delicious cricket/worm.

Can you gut load the insects with chocolate and feed them to your chameleon?

No, Don’t do it. Chocolates are fatal to chameleons and don’t give them to your pet in any form. Mostly when you gut loads your insect with the melted chocolate, the insect will die.

What fruits and vegetable chameleon should not eat?

The below mentioned fruits and vegetables can be toxic to chameleon

  • Cabbage
  • Figs
  • Apricots
  • Iceberg lettuce
  • Don’t feed Poisonous Insects like Fireflies
  • Don’t catch any insects around your house and feed your chameleon.
  • Don’t feed them with mango. They can be toxic to chameleons.
  • Don’t provide them with kale, spinach, broccoli. They can mess your pet’s nutrients level
  • Avoid acidic fruits

Pay attention when your chameleon eats food. If they didn’t like any food or any food cause adverse reactions, don’t repeat to feed them again with that specific food.

Dead insects and leftover fruits/vegetables

The dead crickets or worms don’t attract the chameleon. Don’t feed your pet with dead insects. It may contain bacteria, and who knows the reason for their death. Always feed your chameleon with live insects.

Can you feed rollie pollies/potato bugs to Chameleons?

Rollie pollies are heavy metal bio accumulators. They eat vegetation that could be harmful to your chameleon, and can also carry parasites. But chameleons love these and so you can use a captive breed rollie pollies to feed your chameleon.

Is it reasonable to feed chameleon with Mice?

Don’t do such horrible things. Not all chameleons eat mice, and most of all, mice have a high-fat content. So it is good to avoid them.

Large Chameleons are capable of eating mice. Suppose your chameleon is larger than the mice. You can feed them the newborn pinky mice once in a while

Can I give canned food to my chameleon?

Well, No. Canned foods like insects, greens are not gut-loaded before they are cooked and froze. So it is not a good idea to feed your pet with.

Can I feed them with chicken, meat, and other lizards?

Remember, chameleons are insectivorous. They love insects and not chicken, meat, mice, or any lizards. It could cause some serious health problems to your chameleon.

Wild chameleons occasionally eat birds and lizards because of their environment, and it is not suggested for pet chameleons.

Why shouldn’t we use Vitamin D3 along with calcium?

Typically vitamin D3 is produced in every living organism with the help of the sun rays.

If you have an indoor cage, then you can supplement Vitamin D3 once in a while along with the calcium supplements. Though it is an indoor cage, we are using artificial UV-B lights, which help the chameleon to produce Vitamin D3 on its own.

If you provide Vitamin D3 supplements, there is a possibility for over-dosing the vitamin content and leads to some other health problems in chameleons.

Then what can be provided for your chameleon?

Chameleon eats live crickets, worms, snails, cockroaches, locusts. Other than these few chameleons like fruits and vegetables, it differs according to chameleon types and nature. Out of all the insects, few are extremely good and nutritious to Chameleons they are,

  • Crickets
  • Dubia Roaches
  • Hornworms
  • Reptiworms

It is suggested to have these insects as the main course, and there are few other insects that you can feed your chameleon occasionally to get the fat content. They are,

  • Mealworms
  • Superworms
  • Waxworms

When you come across your chameleon chewing some greens or plants in the cage, there is more possibility that your pet love greens. In this case, there are few greens that you should feed them regularly. They are,

  • Collard Greens
  • Mustard Greens
  • Endive
  • Escarole
  • Dandelions

Like greens, when you feed your chameleon with vegetables, you can provide your chameleons with vegetables once a month if they like it. The recommended vegetables to feed are,

  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Sweet Potatoes

The fruits that chameleon may like are:

  • Kiwi
  • Apple
  • Peeled orange
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Tangerines
  • Melons

It is not recommended to feed them repeatedly with greens and vegetables since it is not their choice of taste. The vegetables mentioned above and greens are recommended, but if your pet has a different taste to the vegetables and greens, please change the menu.

Try to change their food because when they get bored with the type of food you are feeding them, they won’t eat.
