How to clean/bath chameleon?

Bathing our pets is essential but, bathing our chameleon pet is a little bit tough.

Chameleons do not need any external bathing from humans. They’ve been figured out how to keep themselves clean. If you need to bathe your chameleon, fill a plastic tub with warm water up to the chameleon’s armpits. Allow your pet to be in it for 20 minutes.

If you do this in the outdoors, put a protective screen above the tub so other animals cannot harm your chameleon.

How to shower a chameleon ?

If your chameleon is facing trouble getting rid of a bit of stuck shed skin, we can give a shower to our pet chameleon.

Put your chameleon on a large plant. The shower should be set to a warm but not hot temperature. Aim the shower to the wall so the tiny droplets are formed and create a spray. Make sure those droplets fall on the chameleon.

A direct spray of water makes stress for chameleon.

Why do we need to bathe a chameleon?

When you have a pet chameleon is living in captivity, there is no natural breakdown of their waste like there would be in the wild. If not removed, a pile-up of waste would make a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria, as well as parasites.

Should we use a shower or spray?

Chameleons will eagerly lick the water off plants and also the sides of the enclosure. So, spraying is more comfortable than the direct shower. You should spray several times a day. But remember that chameleons are cold-blooded, and they are not meant for warm showers.

Is there any separate for cleaning the chameleon?

Clean freshwater is used to clean the chameleons. But not any type of cleanser or soap. Snakes and lizards do not need soap or bath additives.

Why should we not bathe it in the normal water?

Bathing chameleons with normal water makes chameleons uncomfortable. Make sure the water is not hot or not too cold. This will hurt the chameleon’s eyes. So it is better to use lukewarm water.

What is the container for a chameleon to bathe?

We can use a tub filled with warm water but not hot for bathing. For showering, place a chameleon on the leaves. But remember, it should be done with warm water.

What kind of plants should we use while showering the chameleons?

Plants are not terms of the bath. But it gives a soft feel, and chameleons drink water on the plants. So we use plants.

We can use plants like little silk trees in the shower. The silk tree does not cause overwatering a live plant. And also silk tree makes the chameleons feel the shower soft and warm.

How to shower the chameleons with plants?

Run the shower as soft as raindrops are floating. Place your little silk tree under the “pretend” gentle warm shower and let your chameleons have an enjoyable shower. If very dehydrated, your pet may stay in the shower for 30 mins or more drinking.

When your pet starts restless or stops drinking water, take your pet from the shower and place him under his basking light to ensure that your pet is not chilled.

Baby chameleons are not allowed to get a shower as they are sensitive to shower. So, wait until 4 to 5 months old or more to shower them.

What is the ideal time to bathe or shower your pet chameleon?

Once or twice a week is sufficient to shower a chameleon. If you shower daily, your pet may get restless and seems tired.

Can Chameleons swim?

Some say chameleons can swim, but the truth is chameleons are not swimmers. They just attempt to float in the water to get to a safe place.

Can Chameleons drown?

Yes, Chameleons can drown. It is not suggested to keep a bowl of water in their cage for whatever reason because if they get in that bowl of water, they won’t be able to get out.

They don’t know how to drink from the bowl of water, and more likely, they don’t like it. It is one of the reasons why we shower and mist the cages.

Can Chameleons breathe underwater?

No reptiles can breathe underwater except crocodiles. Crocodiles can breathe in water because they spend most of their life in water. Chameleons cannot breathe underwater, and no other terrestrial reptiles and amphibians.

How long chameleons can hold their breath?

They can hold their breath only for few seconds, and they cannot survive in water. If they are in the water for an extended period, they can be affected by chronic diseases, kidney failures, and arthritis.

Can you keep an artificial waterfall in the cage?

So, I would suggest you not use artificial waterfalls. The disadvantage of keeping this artificial waterfall is that they pump the same water repeatedly. There is a high possibility of getting infected by bacteria and other germs that may contain your pet’s feces.

You can use the waterfall once in a while but make sure it is on a far side of the cage and far away from your chameleon. When your chameleon wants, they can enjoy the waterfall but make sure the water’s pressure is not high. Also, change the water after an hour.
